Look up the successful Inspectors in your area. Ask them if they will take you along or even provide some training. You may even have to go outside your area to get someone to train you or let you ride along. This will be far better than any training you can take online or from a book!

A Builder will always tell you that a City or County Inspector has "inspected" their home and it was fine. However, the sad truth is that these inspectors are generally incompetent or just don't care. Most will be at your home less than 30 minutes before heading out to another home. Take your Inspectors advice and get a Structural Engineer. It will be very difficult for your Builder to argue with their findings!

I prefer the older Protimeters. They can get into some tight areas!

Roof was inspected from (ground with binocs, ladder, etc). Roof was not walked due to ____. Recommend having a reputable roofing company further evaluate the roof covering as it is possible that hidden damage may be present.

If you spend any time at all in Texas inspecting new construction, you know it seems builders are always trying to throw roadblocks up to having their homes inspected by independent inspectors. This doesn't surprise me at all.
