That was the first South Park episode so relevant to home inspection. It was epic!

I'll wait until spring though since snow will be covering the roof most of the time pretty soon.

strap a cordless blow dryer to it and show you are the man!

That would take a VERY long time to melt 2 feet of snow...

I'm currently using a camera pole and as soon as I can afford it, I'll purchase a quad copter.

Did you see the NAHI article about the FAA and the difference between recreational use of drones and business use? My guess is enjoy it while you can because within a few years you'll need a license and a flight plan. The FAA has already stated that "free" pictures used for commercial interests are not "hobby" ... ask any private pilot, these guys are used to getting their way.

Proposed N.C. drone law

The new law governing drone use in the state:

Prohibits any person or state agency from using a drone to conduct surveillance of a person, an occupied dwelling or private property without the consent of the owner.Bans using a drone to photograph someone without that person’s consent. It does, however, make an exception for photographs of “news worthy events” or places where the public is invited — a provision added at the behest of broadcasters.Allows law enforcement to use drones in the case of a risk of terrorist attack, if the agency obtains a search warrant, to prevent “imminent danger to life,” or to pursue a suspect or missing person.Bans the use of infrared or thermal imaging technology, except for scientific, agricultural or wildlife management purposes.Allows any person photographed inappropriately to seek $5,000 in damages for each photograph or video taken.Makes it a felony to use an unmanned aircraft with a weapon attached. Using a drone to hunt or fish will be a misdemeanor, as will publishing images taken with infrared technology on an unmanned aerial vehicle.Requires drone operators to have a license, which will be issued by the state.

gfricke wrote:$500 for the DJI FC40, don't need anything fancier than that. About double the cost of a good ladder. Its not as hard to fly as you might think.

I hadn't monitored this thread; but if there's a cheapskate's way in, I'm interested.

Juan Jimenez wrote:I want to get a pole or a copter with camera. With poles, how do you point the camera downwards or move them around from the ground?

Regarding pointing downward - the Polester has an attachment that allows for angular shots. Also, you can create enough bend to get downward images. Picture a fishing pole with less bend. The images you get are macro enough that a downward image is not a problem. It may be difficult to imagine by reading this.

Regarding moving around on the ground, it is not difficult to do. The pole is comprised of four 5 foot sections, each with a large plastic wing nut that you loosen to extend or retract that section.

Have a look here: www.longshotcamerasystems.com/

I've been using the pole camera for over a year now. I know b/c I recall seeing the Polester at COA-Vegas 2013. By then I had already invested in a painter's pole from Lowes, a pole camera attachment from some pole camera vendor on the internet, a wi-fi camera ($180 samsung,) and my wife's ipad (downside: my wife came w/ the ipad.) Works well. (Did anyone buy that INachi set-up for $800?)

the new FAA rules regarding drones was just released last week. interesting, it stopped short of identifying or banning their use for real estate purposes. they only dealt with flying near airports, congested areas, parks and rec areas, invasion of privacy, etc. they are here to stay and you may as well get "on board"

The NTSB just ruled, last week, the FAA has on authority over "model aircraft" flying below 400 feet unless they are flying in restricted airspace. keep your drone less than 400 feet, don't invade the neighbors privacy and you should be good as I read this.
