I moved into a rented house a few months ago. I have a sewer smell that comes and goes daily in my house. The disgusting smell seems to be coming from the kitchen. This smell usually happens in the evening to late-night daily. I have had a plumber in and could not find anything wrong, recommended a video. I have had the HVAC unit cleaned and ducts cleaned. The smell only lasts for a couple of hours then dissipates to no smell. I use dyeing products for my hair.
As you know, there are some nasty chemicals in hair products; I was wondering if this is the answer: when the pump cycles sewage thru the house, it permeates up thru the house in open plumbing (toilet, sink, etc.) This would also answer the intermittent smell? Any chemicals I could use to clean the system?

Your plumbing traps should be preventing any sewer gasses from entering the home. Consider locating someone who can conduct a smoke test on your drain lines to see if there is a leakage of sewer gas somewhere in the pipes.

You mentioned a pump, what pump is that the sump pump? If so make that the sump pump discharge is not connected at all to the waste line. That can cause an issue especially if the sump pump lacks a backflow valve.

Hey!!

Thank you so much for the fast response. Yes, I'll indeed consider calling a person who can conduct a smoke test. My neighbor has suggested a drain repairing person who did an excellent job with their repairs.
Thank you once again.

One other item to check is the garbage disposal, if you have one. Sometimes they get rather nasty inside and smell after use, especially with hot water.
