Multi inspector firms may grow in the future but I don't think you're ever going to get rid of the one man operations. It's 2015 and there is still a small mom and pop grocery store in the center of the town I live near.

I also fear that regulation and inspection requirements may increase in the coming decades. The reason I say I fear it is because usually the requirements dreamed up by regulatory agencies are often misguided bordering on absurd. I actually like having a minimal SOP because there will always be bad companies providing that minimal service. This gives you something to stand out from in your market.

Oh, and one more. I think Dominic is going to invent a way to link HIP to brain waves so that you simply blink your eyes to take a photo and then imagine the comment in your brain and it automatically inserts into the report.

Don't discount the possibility of a large player taking a big piece of the market.

I've ready a few comments about not trusting the younger guys in the field-
I have two thoughts on that:
1. It's not like they have to be 20 to shift the average age. 30 will do.
2. I think this is our industry perception more than public perception. Graduation from college happens at 22/23 for some, a couple years of experience and I would say 99% of the public would be just fine with a young guy doing an inspection. They pay them every day 10 times as much for furnace installations.

On the current course of the profession, with the exception of the true business owners, it is highly likely.

Here's the train of thought. Imagine a big company- a Berkshire Hathaway or Fidelity. Billion + in revenue.
Now let's say a board member who knows well the relationships they have in title, mortgage, and warranty, and they have a conversation about the only vendor they don't have national deals with- Home Inspection.
A quick internet search and they find the InterNACHI forum with references to agents and brokers that are, shall we say, less than flattering. Clicking through to the sites of the most active and perceptively respected members and they find more of the same.
All one of them has to do is ask logical questions.
1. Is there a deal with these guys across the country? No
2. Is there a big player that can handle a national deal? Maybe
3. What's the exposure and average items found? Minimal
4. What's the regulatory environment like? Minimal, non-existent, or manageable depending on the state.
5. Startup costs & overhead? Next to nothing.
The next step for them is easy and potentially dreadful for our profession.
How to prevent this and capture a huge opportunity?
We're doing it and many of you have joined. First we're working hard at outranking the seedy sites in the industry with this one. Mission almost accomplished there. Second, our clients are doing a great job of working with brokers and agents. And of course third we are constantly working on national deals.

I really don't understand why guys bad mouth agents, I love my agents, they keep me in business and feed my family, and we work together to help our mutual clients, I don't see the issue.

It doesn't take many voices to make a whole army look like terrorists. Just loud ones.
The hijackers of our industry, if you follow my analogy, are those loud voices and the IHINA-like micro organizations with an axe to grind.

SixthSense HI wrote:I see home inspectors becoming more of a specialist in each field. I think the standards will grow and the process of getting your license will become much more difficult. Its a good thing we got in when we did, but I see home inspection fees going up in the future and us being required to go into more detail in certain areas. This will increase liability issues with the profession.
I completely disagree with this. Inspectors are more dumbed down than I can ever remember. Licensing is a complete joke. internachi has encouraged every retail sales clerk in America to become a HI and instilled a get rick quick mentality.
Just look at all the internachi recruiting posters on the break room walls at K Mart, WalMart, Payless Shoes, Best Buy, etc., etc.

Having spent 4 yrs living in Peoria in college, I have 1st hand experience that that town has always been 20 yrs behind the rest of the US.
