I got to see a demo at a thermal conference I attended from FLIR in June. The resolution is pretty poor, but that is to be expected as it is not a IR germanium lens and uses software to enhance all the images. On higher end cameras the pixels are better and the software (MSX) can be turned on and off. I think that this will be a cool tool for a homeowner to help possibly diagnose some issues in the home, but as a professional, I would at least spend 600 more and buy an entry level handheld. I have not seen anyone with one, but as the costs come down I suspect some clients may very well pull it out. We use T420 cameras, but also have an IR business too. I would say if that is what can be afforded I would get it, as I would not want a client to pull one out and start showing me things at one of our inspections. It will be cool to talk with a client that may want to learn more about IR.

Interested to see what others have to say.

I picked up a FLIR ONE as it's what I can afford at this moment. It's not something I will advertise, but I can use it from time to time if something comes in question. The little bit I have played with it, it seems like it will do it's job, as bfish said, it may be a great tool for a home owner. Of course proper training and understanding how these cameras work, allow for better interpretation of the pictures.

I wish they made a version for Android or iPad, but it's exclusively for the 5 and 5S, which obviously greatly limits their market.

I think this is a great entry level camera and in the hands of trained personnel it can get anyone started in the business. The camera is great for finding potential issues then confirming issues with other tools specific to the issues.

I have one. I like it. There are pro's and cons, The cons are I think the resolution is only 60 x 80 and it's diffinitely not is good as my larger Testo thats 160 x 120 The pros are its not $3800 either. Its only 350. I am not sure it be a stand alone to do thermal images alone but as and extra tool in my bag its awesome. Here is a shot I took of a leak in the ceiling.

Okay, but not great, for qualitative thermal inspections like air infiltration or plumbing leaks, but with that low of a temperature range it isn't really useful for much that requires temperature recording.

The MSX helps alleviate the issue of the low resolution.

You can see it in Preston's image. Flir combines a wireframe version of the digital image with the thermal image you're taking. The details of the digital image are overlaid onto the thermal which really helps identify what you're looking at.

Lots os great comments above and Brian Fish said it best. If you have not noticed FLIR began marketing it as a "Consumer" level device in their early marketing. Quality of the image is very low however, if you are in an area with a lot of radiant heat systems it is a quick and easy tool for checking it for operation. And yes, MSX in your camera is great.

I use a Flir E8 and cost was a consideration but to print reports you need a beter camera.

My bottom line is no free thermal, quick scan with inspection is $150, stand alone IR is $300 to $500 for 1 hour and report. Someone has to pay for the camera so I charge or don't offer IR. Problem with these low cost cameras is homeowners will think they are the same as a $6000.00 Testo and this will hurt the chances of making money on residential IR. My 2cents anyway.

Philo we ordered two C2's for our teams. Much less cumbersome and they fit perfectly for our needs. My only worry is that in like a year or two they'll come out with a C3 with like 120x160 resolution or something for the same price, much like Apple's model, trickle out minor improvements every year or two.
