It's amazing to me how little inspectors value themselves- and I'm not talking about the typical ego-driven stupidity of inspectors getting in a room and trying to convince each other to charge more money while offering even less value- I'm talking about inspectors actually offering to crawl through poop for $35-$50 and sometimes less.
That's right!
A 20 minute crawl through the poop of everyone that has dropped a chocolate corn dragon ever since that pipe started leaking in the crawl space 15 years ago runs around $35-$50 from inspectors all across the country.
To determine if you're in this boat, simply determine how much time you spend in a crawl space, divide that over your total inspection time, and then figure out what your average inspection fee is and you will have your DDV or "dung diving value".
Let's say you spend an average of 20 minutes in a crawl space, an average of 200 minutes on an inspection, and charge on average $350.00. Your DDV would be $35.
While increasing your DDV to $50 or even $100 might seem appealing to some, many inspectors have found a way to avoid dragging themselves through loafs while delivering a better, more thorough inspection with the CrawlBot.
See videos of it in action here: http://www.CrawlBot.net
Despite its incredible capabilities, proven track record, and great value (especially with the ISG financing package), some inspectors still prefer to get paid $35 to crawl around in years of accumulated mud bunnies in every crawl space they encounter- and bringing all that cagada home with them.

Crawl bots may be helpful, but they lack tactile feedback, can't hear, smell or see subtle observations, can't reach out and test a water stain with a moisture meter, etc. They can't reach up and move subfloor insulation or other obstacles that are blocking the view. They can't probe wood for rot or damage.
It's certainly a useful tool that has value, but your assertion that the Crawlbot provides "a better, more thorough inspection" is hardly accurate, even if it's helpful and can provide a basic inspection of a crawlspace.
And some of us charge way more than $35-$50 for a crawlspace inspection....
Dom.

If your average inspection fee is $500, which would be toward the high end, your DDV is around $50. That's how much you charge to drag yourself through every piece of bun fudge that ever leaked into any crawl space you crawl.
Think about that next time you're doing it and ask yourself... "Is this worth it? When I was a kid did I dream of one day buying gallons of Tide just to get the stench of floating bootycakes out of my shirts?"
Beyond that, try out the CrawlBot at a conference. It can't smell but that's really a non issue since you're at the entry anyhow. A demo will likely change your mind.
And check out the RoofBot when we release it...it may save your life.
You may disagree with me and that's cool, but I am passionate about getting every inspector-including my father- off of roof surfaces (where they can and do die) and out of the crawl spaces (where they are being treated well beneath their value). If you're a respectable professional, treat yourself like one. If you want to play with poop, go work for one of those companies that picks up dog bombs out of the yard. I hear the money is pretty good.
