Can you guy's please explain Price fixing for Inspectors and how to avoid it? I would love to see a real life situation and I'll gladly listen to any and all advice. How do you keep from Price fixing and still make a profit while giving a great service for a reasonable price.

I guess I'm lost as to your question. Price fixing generally refers to competitors in a market colluding to keep prices artificially high- most famously in recent years additives suppliers, concrete companies, oil companies, and airlines.

I learned about price fixing in college ... but that was many, many moons ago. My question is this: Do I have to stay pretty much dollar for dollar as to what my competition is offering?

Well, you certainly can't ignore market forces. That being said, here's what I call the "Price Progression" in home inspection;

1. Aggressive entry into market - 10% lower than median.
2. Referral building- around median rates
3. Differentiation- adding on your value. 5-10% higher than median
4. Non growth- when you've hit your comfort zone and have a strong referral base and a solid value proposition, market rates mean very little if you're not totally out of line.

Due to the strong referral levels in home inspection, nothing is standard. Due to the fragmentation of the market, I've never seen price fixing in this industry.

I'm not sure you understand what price fixing is. Price fixing is collusion with other businesses. For example, if Nathan started a thread about how we should all raise our rices to $450, so that consumers would not have a choice, but to pay the increased costs, then that would be illegal. Price fixing is extremely rare though. If Nathan had the brain washing power that Frank Rotte thinks he has, and we all agreed, theres always someone who will see an opportunity to lower their prices and defect from the group.

You shall all charge $15,000 per inspection starting right now and send $1000 of it to me...and these aren't the droids you're looking for. Lol

What I do is charge about 50%-100% more than my competition. I am not even in the ball park to most of them. I want people to ask, "What the hell makes that guy think he is worth more'? I then explain to them, that there is no way I can perform a professional service, with they way I do business, have the technology, the support, the vehicles and the insurances for less.

How can these people afford to do it for their price. The way is something has to give, unless they are named "The Philanthropic Home Inspection Company".

If your decision is to find the cheapest inspection company, then we do not fit the bill. If your looking for at least THREE Florida licensed Home Inspectors to inspect your house, use thermal infrared, and we are the oldest inspection company in SW Florida while performing over one BILLION dollars worth of Real Estate this year alone.

No other company can say that. How can we inspect so much worht of Real Estate? because the discerning buyer who want the best ROI, calls us.

Get your customer to SEE VALUE...if they see COST, you LOST the job, your competition didn't win it.
