Hello everyone. I'm a new inspector currently working with a company on a part time basis. So far I have been lucky enough to start doing home inspections with success but I am thinking to the future and how I would eventually branch off to start my own business. How do I create a a name for myself if I work under a company that manages my clients/appointments? What type of recommendations does everyone have for a new inspector starting out? I have several years of experience as an engineer for construction firms. Any advice would be appreciated since I see this long term and don't plan on stopping any time soon. I have already joined an organization and may look to join one at the national level.

When you do decide to take the plunge and go out on your own your best chance at success is simple: devote your life to your profession. I jumped in head first and gave it my all. You never work harder than when you work for yourself! It's a huge commitment to be successful and just prepare to not have much of a life when you start out. You gotta take those Sunday inspections and miss some personal events. After a few years when you get busy enough you can tone it down and be more selective. Actual inspections are just a small part of what you have to do. Think marketing and meeting realtors. Think bookkeeping and taxes. Think continued education. At the end of the day your report is the only tangible thing left after your inspection - so make sure it is something you are proud of and can stand behind - that report may be seen by many people for years to come. You gotta make it happen.

Hey thanks for the replies. I guess I just wanted to know if there is anything I need to consider or that I can do to leverage my contacts now. I'm already working to expand our business but I will always be tied to the company (obviously until I leave and do this on my own). I don't mind the hard work I just wanted to see if there was a right way to do it to use my existing opportunity to improve myself and my future.

best advice Ive gotten from other inspectors is to learn how to market yourself ASAP. I'm new also and I am diving into learning SEO and website optimizing right now. Great stuff to know, its a digital age my friend. Not sure how relevant agent marketing is now, i hear things from different people. best of luck

This is a tricky spot to be in. While you want to build a future for yourself, you also need to consider your loyalty to the company you're working for now. If someone else is working hard to market and book appointments for you, you don't want to market yourself too much while under their umbrella.

On the other hand, you're in the perfect spot to network. While someone else is booking inspections for you, they are basically setting you up with face to face meetings with agents. All you have to do is be nice, professional, and introduce yourself to agents. Just like in any networking your personal name recognition will build up over time even while working for another company. I think of it like a barber. If I have a favorite barber I see within a hair cutting salon, if he/she moves to another salon, I will probably change salons to keep with my person. If/when you decide to go out on your own, you may not be able to contact agents yourself for a while, depending on your contract with your old firm, but agents will be asking for you and will search for you on their own.

The advice to study up on SEO is good too, it takes a while to learn and will definitely help you market yourself online once you go out on your own. Marketing enough to set appointments for a full schedule is tough work. Make sure it's what you want to do before you go out on your own.

While I am not sure of your current working relationship where you are now I would start w/ having a conversation there. The current owners might be thinking of an exit strategy and you could be their answer. While I applaud you for wanting to take the plunge into being your own boss might want to keep in mind that you are standing on the shoulders of the person that came before you.

There are reasons agents are using your current firm. While marketing has value to increase business you need to also focus on having systems in place to execute and control the business.
