Hi All:

I was wondering what some of you consider to be reasonable marketing expenses as a percentage of gross. 5%? 10%? 20%? Thoiughts?

Rusty Razor:

For a home inspection company most would consider 3-5 percent of gross as appropriate.

Your best marketing is free.

It is how you treat your clients, it is your deliverables, how your report looks, your visibility in the community

It is how you are dressed, your respect for people's homes and how you speak.

Are you pleasant? Best marketing is a smile and making people know you care abut them and their family

Do you like to shop in a dirty store , or go into a business with crabby or unpleasant people ....neither do home inspection clients

YOU and the environment you create are the key to your success no matter how much you spend.....but yes, it is very wise and essential to spend on marketing in good times and bad.

I try to max out at 20% If business is slow I might try to amp it up a bit. Usually in the winter to over take the competitors who slow down because of the winter.

I agree whole hearty with Dan Howard. However, that was not your question.

It depends. If your business is a franchise such as Pillar to Post or something else, you are forced to give back 5-10% of your inspection fee and they promised to re-invest it on you in the form of SEO and other marketing materials. If you are independent (like many of us) marketing cost varies from month to month and season to season, is not cast in stone. Summer time are busy times while winters are dead, that is probably where you spend most of your money advertising. Today Facebook ads are way more effective than Google and would give you more for your buck.

It's going to depend on what your goals are. Initially you may be reinvesting everything you have to reach a certain number of inspections a month. Once you get established, you can lower the percentage to what you are comfortable with provided it sustains your market share.
